The Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) is incorporating new content into the driving theory test to include questions on cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and automated external defibrillators (AEDs).
The purpose of this update is to increase cardiac arrest survival rates in the UK by equipping more people with foundational emergency response knowledge. According to Mark Winn, the DVSA’s chief driving examiner, this change is intended to ensure new drivers understand the importance of acting safely in emergency situations. The expanded theory test question bank is a step toward raising awareness of these life-saving skills.
From spring 2026, the UK driving theory test will include new questions on CPR and defibrillator use, thanks to a collaboration between DVSA and the Resuscitation Council UK. With over 2.4 million tests annually and more than 40,000 out-of-hospital cardiac arrests each year, this change aims to equip drivers with essential lifesaving skills.
