The UK Government has just introduced a significant change to driving licence entitlements.

The new change is set to make the transition to Zero Emission Vehicles (ZEVs) smoother and more accessible than ever before, especially for those looking for heavier models.

From June 10, 2025, if you hold a standard Category B driving licence, you’ll now be able to drive electric or hydrogen-powered vehicles with a Maximum Authorised Mass (MAM) of up to 4,250kg. This is a considerable increase from the previous 3,500kg limit for petrol and diesel vehicles, directly addressing the additional weight often associated with ZEV batteries and fuel systems.

Why does this matter for your next lease?

This updated legislation is a game-changer for businesses and individuals alike. Previously, driving a ZEV exceeding 3,500kg often required additional training or a higher licence category, creating an extra hurdle for adoption. Now, that barrier has been removed!

This means that a wider range of ZEVs, including larger electric vans, SUVs, and even some small electric trucks, are now within reach for standard Category B licence holders. For businesses, this opens up exciting possibilities for electrifying their fleets without the need for extensive driver retraining, allowing for:

Reduced Training Costs: The removal of mandatory additional training for Category B licence holders drives down the financial burden of switching to a ZEV fleet.

Increased Payload Capacity: The new weight allowance ensures that the added weight of batteries doesn’t compromise your vehicle’s carrying capacity, making ZEVs a more practical option for heavier loads.

Streamlined Operations: No more splitting deliveries or requiring different drivers for heavier ZEVs. Your existing team can now confidently operate a broader spectrum of zero-emission vehicles.
